Abstract
Women are alienated in the governance of Benue State and Nigeria in general. Studies have shown
that some negative aspects of African customs and traditions are directed towards women, and
these prevent them from maximally utilizing their potentials. This status-quo has marginalized
women in Benue State politically, socially and economically. In addition to thisthey are oppressed,
exploited and discriminated against. This situation is detrimental to the development of democracy
and the nation at large. More so Democracy as a system is projected to carry all citizens along for
it to be effective and sustainable. However, the situation in Benue State is not in conformity with
the ideology of democracy. This paper therefore, looks at the impedimentsto women’sinvolvement
in governance in Benue State and observes that, the alienation of women in the governance of the
state is a result of socio-cultural and economic constraints. Furthermore, the paper interrogates the
consequence of this on sustainable democracy and contends that, sustainable democracy can only
be attained if both genders are fully integrated into the governance of the state. The paper utilizes
both primary and secondary sources for its analysis. The paper asserts that, to enhance women’s
involvement in governance, the socio- cultural and economic impediments must be dismantled
through the various socialization processes, sensitization and economic empowerment.
Consequently, sustainable democracy would also be enhanced.
