Abstract
This paper focuses on nature and the contributions of Herodotus to the development of
historiography. It first discusses the concept of historiography, and followed by examining the
nature of Herodotus’ historiography and its contributions to the emergence of historiography. And
its importance in the study of African History. Being a library-based study, its data were mainly
obtained from secondary sources and from discussions with historians. A purely historical research
method was adopted for the purpose of gaining deeper understanding of the pertinent issues
involved in the development of the historiography in the Greco-Roman period. The historical data
was evaluated utilizing external and internal mechanism.

Introduction
Histiography, according to George (2005), is the art of writing history or how history is produced.
Similarly, Salevani (1988) sees it as the study of the way history has been and is written. Also,
Akombo (2015) views it as the process of collecting, assembling, interpreting, analyzing and the
