Abstract
This study assesses the welfare of Ngas veterans of the Nigerian Civil War in Plateau State, Nigeria, with a focus on the Ngas Ex-Service and Family Association (NEFA established since 2009 to present). The research evaluated the socio-economic conditions, access to healthcare, psychological well-being, and community reintegration of veterans and their families within the Ngas community. The paper uses a historical research methodology based on a qualitative approach. The sources adopted to spawn data include primary sources (oral interviews, archival and government white papers), and secondary sources (published and unpublished materials or works of synthesis). The data were subjected to critical analyses and examination. The findings indicate that significant challenges faced by Ngas civil war veterans include: limited access to healthcare services, inadequate financial support, and lack of recognition for their contributions. Additionally, the study highlights the role of community networks and NEFA in providing social support, albeit gaps in resources and awareness persist. The implications of these findings are critical for policymakers and community leaders in enhancing the welfare of civil war veterans, fostering a supportive environment, and ensuring that the sacrifices of these veterans are acknowledged and rewarded. This assessment offers recommendations for targeted interventions and policy reforms aimed at improving the overall welfare of Ngas Civil War veterans in Plateau State, ensuring that their needs are addressed comprehensively.
