Abstract

The paper presents and discusses on the Muhammad Wabi dynasty and the legacies of Jama‘are Emirate in the 19th and 20th Centuries. The Emirate, is seated in the Jama‘are Local Government area of Bauchi state, in the North-Eastern Nigeria. Jama‘are Emirate was founded by the people of Fulata-Borno who migrated from Dilara, south-east of Lake Chad. The Emirate derives its name from Fulfulde ‗jama‘are‘, meaning ‗my people‘ or from an amalgamation of two words: jama‘a (people) and Marai, an alternative name for the Dilara plain (jama‘a Marai, [people of Marai]). Muhammad Wabi who was then at Dawasa, carried out a number of Holy wars, especially during the re-establishment of the Borno under El-khanemi (1814-1835) that drove the Fulani steadily westwards. The research uses primary, secondary and archival sources, as well as the multidisciplinary approach as the methodology adopted in the presentations and analyses of data, accordingly. Finally, the paper traces the historical origin of Jama‘are Emirate, the movements of the founders of the Emirate for their permanent settlement, Muhammad Wabi dynasty, their inter-cultural relations, as well as their legacies in the 19th and 20th Centuries.
